Every work of art starts with a vision that comes from within. It’s a passion for creating something truly original.
A devotion to achieving perfection that goes far beyond one’s expectations. And what makes it worth all the time and effort is the joy that comes from sharing the final creation with others.
Samuel J. McCullagh had a vision in 1867. He could see that the appreciation for premium coffees and teas was spreading throughout the country. He saw how his small retail establishment was steadily growing every day. He also realized that an enormous opportunity existed to create an even bigger demand for teas, coffees and spices. And through exceptional quality and outstanding service, Samuel J. McCullagh swiftly mastered the fine art of roasting.
By 1874, Samuel and his brother Jenkinson established the New York Tea Company.
Known for its impeccable quality and exquisite atmosphere, McCullagh’s establishment was surely the place to be seen. Adorned with polished wood and soft gas chandeliers, the store was filled with worldly treasures: Malabar pepper, Madagascar vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, jars of Canton ginger, conical loaves of sugar in pale blue wrappers. Shelves of Chinese, Japanese, and India teas, along with stylish china pots, were prominently displayed-and the irresistible aroma of roasting coffee permeated all.
From 1900 through the late 1940s, the McCullagh business expanded to bigger venues. The company changed ownership during the 1920s and its wholesale business, which specialized in coffees, teas, cocoas and sugars, grew at a steady pace. Recent years saw more growth and change. In 1988 another familiar regional name in coffee, The Horton Coffee Company, was added to the McCullagh family. And in 1989, McCullagh Food Services was formed to create a presence in Toronto.
Throughout these many years of growth and change, the McCullagh name always remained, as did its tradition of excellence. Today, McCullagh Coffee still embraces the commitment and dedication of Samuel’s original vision. As we continue to expand our presence in markets throughout the United States and Canada, we see the
opportunities that lie ahead in the future, and we look forward to making you a part of our picture for success.
